概要

The radioactive waste generated by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) has characteristics which differ from those of waste from other normal operating stations in that: (1) It contains radionuclides deriving from accident-generated core fuels; (2) It may contain seawater ingredients resulting from the reactor-core cooldown immediately after the tsunamis and the accident; (3) It contains zeolite and sludge which have high radiation doses and the treatment and disposal of which has never been carried out by anyone; and (4) Contamination levels vary from place to place and the amount of contamination is large. In order to secure safety in the treatment and disposal of the radioactive waste at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, we, IRID and JAEA, have been conducting research and development that takes into account the characteristics of the waste different from those of waste produced from normal operation.
