It is known that weld distortion has negative influence on structure integrity. Therefore, it is important for ensuring structure strength and reliability to control weld distortion appropriately. Especially, development of various countermeasures against weld distortion is desirable for emergent repair work in large-scale accident such as earthquakes. As one of useful countermeasure against angular distortion, in-process control welding with reverse-side heating was proposed however validation of the proposed method was not enough. In this study, the reduction of angular distortion by reverse-side heating is numerically investigated and experimentally validated with a focus on the effect of position and intensity of gas heating. As the result, the appropriate gas heating condition for reducing angular distortion effectively is clarified in relation to the highest temperature distribution. It is also shown that angular distortion is completely controlled by reverse-side gas heating.
