Austenitic stainless steel is usually classified as a nonmagnetic material. However, applying stress transforms the plastic part of it into a martensitic crystal struct ure, from an austenitic crystal structure and it becomes magnetized. Strain evaluation and fatigue evaluation can be performed by measuring the leakage magnetic flux de nsity of remanent magnetization after applying strain and fatigue to austenitic stainless steels. This paper describes the measurement of leakage magnetic flux density of remanent magnetization by a typical Hall element sensor for SUS304 and SUS304L and by a high-sensitivity thin-film flux-gate magnetic sensor for SUS316 and SUS316L.
