In this study, a relation among maintenance optimization, maintenance performance target and maintenance importance is discussed. And the definition of maintenance importance and its quantitative evaluation method is also discussed. As a result of consideration, the following results were obtained.. (1) Clearly different from natural or physical phenomena, it is difficult to determine a maintenance plan as a single optimum solution. An optimum maintenance plan can be obtained by setting maintenance targets on safety and economy and repeating maintenance cycles, plan-do-check-act, for maintenance optimization. Hence, maintenance optimization is accomplished in the maintenance targets. (2) Functional failure of each component constituting giant complex plant system could give an impact on both safety and economy. This impact could be quantitatively estimated by evaluating a performance indicator “maintenance importance”. In this paper, the definition of maintenance importance and its calculation method are clarified. (3) It is reasonable and effective to select higher maintenance importance components and invest maintenance resources in them in case of changing existing maintenance programs to attain maintenance performance targets.
